Serger Sewing Machines Review

When sewing clothes, an overlock stitch is usually used to prevent the fabric from fraying at the hem. It is also used to sew a design on the fabric, stitching the elastic and lace, and hemming. A different type of sewing machine is used for this purpose - the Serger sewing machine.

Overlocking is sometimes called merrowing or serging. The term “serger” is widely used in the United States but in Australia and UK the term “overlocker” is still very much in use.Serger Sewing Machines

It was J. Makens Merrow and his son Joseph Merrow of the Merrow Machine Company who were the first to work on the technique of overlock stitching. This happened in 1881. The machine’s original design was based on a patent for crochet stitching.

Overlock sewing machines use loopers to create thread loops for the needle to pass through. This is unlike regular sewing machines that use a lockstitch where two threads - upper and lower - lock together in the hole in the fabric where they pass through. The overlock stitch is similar to crocheting.
